Synopsis

Plant Health Cases: Plant Pathology and Crop Diseases provides an up-to-date and practical overview of the major pathogens affecting agricultural and horticultural crops worldwide. Bringing together contributions from international experts, this book integrates current scientific understanding with field-based insights to support effective disease diagnosis and management. Organized into four parts - Viral and Phytoplasma Diseases, Bacterial Diseases, Fungal and Oomycete Threats, and Horticulture and Plantation Diseases - its key case studies cover citrus Huanglongbing, cassava brown streak, kiwifruit bacterial canker, wheat rusts, downy mildew in grapevines, and Xylella fastidiosa. By examining pathogen biology, epidemiology, and control strategies, this book highlights integrated and sustainable approaches suited to modern crop production systems.

À propos des auteurs

Dr Trisna D. Tungadi is a plant virologist specialising in insect-virus-host interactions. Currently, Trisna is a lecturer at Keele University, UK, where she has been based since 2022. Trisna leads a research group in plant virology and aphid biology as one of the major insect vectors for plant viruses. Prior to working at Keele, Trisna worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Pest and Pathogen Ecology group at NIAB (2019-2022) and in the Molecular Plant Virology Group at the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge (2014-2019). Trisna obtained her BSc and MSc in Biology from Imperial College London (2010) and her PhD in Plant Virology from the University of Cambridge, UK (2014). Trisna's expertise includes virus-vector ecology, analysing aphid feeding and settling behaviour, molecular virology, virus identification, plant defence mechanisms against aphids and viruses. She has worked with both model and crop plants in lab and field settings. She has worked with and maintained active collaborators in the UK, France, Switzerland, Kenya, Ghana, the USA, South Korea, Indonesia, and Singapore. Trisna has an active presence in the wider plant science research community in the UK, where she is a Board member at the British Society for Plant Pathology, Virology steering group committee at the Association of Applied Biologists, and aphid Special Interest Group at the Royal Entomological Society.

Dr Francis O. Wamonje is a Research Leader in Entomology at NIAB, East Malling, UK, where he has worked since 2021. His research brings together molecular and applied entomology to develop tools for early pest detection, molecular taxonomy, and large-scale species identification through DNA metabarcoding. His broader interests include plant-insect interactions, the use of 'omics' in pest surveillance and biocontrol, and the application of environmental DNA (eDNA) for biodiversity monitoring. Before joining NIAB, Francis was a Royal Society FLAIR Fellow at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), Nairobi, where he investigated beneficial microbes associated with crop health and pest control. He previously held postdoctoral positions at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and at the Southern African Centre for Infectious Disease Surveillance in Tanzania. Francis leads and contributes to collaborative research across the UK and Africa. He authors 52 Science Stories, a LinkedIn series that translates agroecology and biodiversity research into accessible insights, and co-convenes the Applied eDNA Network, a community of practice advancing the science and application of eDNA for ecosystem protection and restoration. He holds a PhD in Plant Virology from the University of Cambridge, and BSc and MSc degrees from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
