Synopsis

With rising numbers of patients receiving immune-modulatory agents and the greater global movement of potentially infected people, animals and food products, there is a significantly increased need for expertise in parasitic disease. However, with the time dedicated to teaching parasitology dramatically reduced in many medical teaching contexts, we are failing to develop a new generation of scientists and clinicians familiar with clinical presentations and laboratory manifestations of any but the most common parasitic diseases. This extensively updated third edition of Clinical Parasitology fills that knowledge gap and details the critical practical elements of clinical parasitology, supported by updated approaches to laboratory diagnosis and treatment. It further provides updated treatment protocols, reclassified names of organisms (with old names included for ease of discovery) and improved diagnostic methods that will be invaluable to the reader. The contents of the book are also laid out in a simple accessible format with common and uncommon parasites arranged alphabetically or according to clinical similarity. Each chapter covers the life cycle, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, updated treatment, follow up of cases and prevention (where applicable) for each parasitic infection. The book also provides: Quick reference guidance that combines biology with clinical impact for use in urban and rural medical settings. A detailed description of laboratory parasitology including information on all common and uncommon disease-causing parasites. An essential resource on parasitology that is a neglected and increasingly important area of microbiology, especially in non-endemic areas. This practical handbook is a concise, easy-to-use reference guide to clinical parasitology for busy doctors, laboratory scientists and medical specialists. It also provides essential information for any students of parasitology, including trainees in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology.

He has extensive and varied experience in clinical microbiology having worked both in Australia and India. His interests include Parasitology, Ocular microbiology, Mycology and Mycobacteriology and he has organised numerous workshops in parasitology, ocular microbiology and mycology. He is also involved in organising scientific programs for the Royal College of Pathology of Australasia, the Australian Society of Microbiology and the Parasitology Master Class. His special interest is in clinical parasitology and tropical medicine and he has written a book titled "Clinical Parasitology - a handbook for medical practitioners and microbiologists". He is an invited writer for the ASM Manual of Clinical Microbiology and has written the chapter on Nematodes for 5 editions of the manual. He co-ordinates an international e-Diagnosis expert group in parasitology and is a member of the ESCMID Parasitology Morphology Hub.

Richard Bradbury is Associate Professor of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at James Cook University in Townsville. He is an internationally recognised parasitologist and is the former Team Lead of the Parasitic Diseases Diagnostic Reference Laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States of America. He began his career as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Australian Pathology Industry, becoming a Senior Medical Scientist at the Royal Hobart Hospital. After completing his PhD at the University of Tasmania, his career has involved both academic and clinical laboratory positions in Australia, West Africa, Europe, and the United States of America. His research interests include diagnostics and epidemiology in medical parasitology, with a particular focus on strongyloidiasis and other intestinal helminths. He is a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Diagnostic Technical Advisory group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and has contributed to several other WHO advisory panels in the field of NTDs and parasitic diseases. He has received several professional awards, including the Australian Society for Microbiology Lyn Gilbert award for major contributions in diagnostic laboratory microbiology.

Professor Beverley-Ann Biggs is a clinical academic in the Department of Infectious Diseases, at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, University of Melbourne and she heads the Global and Indigenous Health Group. She has a joint appointment as a Consultant Infectious Disease physician within the Victorian Infectious Diseases Service (VIDS), Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH). She is also recognised internationally for her work on infectious diseases and parasitology, maternal and child health and immigrant health. She is conducting important translational research in remote indigenous communities in Northern Australia to inform more effective prevention and management strategies and address the high rates of chronic conditions, including diabetes and related infections. With collaborators, her research in Vietnam and Bangladesh is investigating strategies for the prevention of malnutrition and infectious diseases that together are major contributors to impaired child growth and development. She also leads the RMH Refugee Health Program, which provides support to general practitioners and other health providers, and she contributes to international, national and state guidelines for the healthy settlement of refugees and immigrants.
