Synopsis

Wealthy and influential ladies here take centre stage, most notably Alice Chaucer, duchess of Suffolk. Chapters explore Alice's almshouse at Ewelme - an example of the institutions which offered care for the elderly in late medieval England; pretenders to Henry VII's throne; how Henry V employed English in France and a comparison of relations between English administrators and the nobility of Gascony with British imperialists and the princes of India.
