Synopsis

The undisputed power of digital technology increasingly controls the way that we live: how we communicate, work and socialise. Alongside the tremendous opportunities that digital technology brings, concerns are growing about problems ranging from cyber-crime to behavioural programming, addiction and isolation. Digital Downsize is a wide-ranging introduction to some of these issues. Looking particularly at the impact of social media and other digital communications, it examines topics including: •How psychology and behaviour is modified by digi-tech•The impact on relationships, skills and social resilience•Living and working in an 'always-on' environment As people's relationship with the online world continues to evolve, and we become increasingly engulfed and mesmerised by its promise, are we using technology wisely—and do we care? This book explores these questions, and looks how young people, in particular, may be affected. Digital Downsize promotes a different sort of relationship between people and digiital technology: one where people use technology in a more 'aware' and balanced way.It ends by offering practical suggestions for how to optimise the way that digi-tech is used, so that it enhances, rather than detracts from, quality of life. This is an accessible book that should make all of us sit back and think about our present and future relationship with digital technology in a post Covid-19 world.

À propos de l'auteur

Nyla Naseer lives in Birmingham, United Kingdom. She is a writer and social commentator. Given the opportunity to gain a different perspective, she has always grabbed it; as a consequence, her life has never been short on real-life drama-be this on the streets of the inner city or in corridors of power, both environments in which she has felt equally comfortable-or uncomfortable. A career that spans working in warehouses to boardrooms has enabled her to experience how organisations operate and the judgments they make. This has prompted an exploration of why people and societies behave as they do. The dominant themes of Nyla's writing are: the innate need of people to be 'human' in both positive and negative ways, the stories that emerge from the soup of change, and the need to understand how we become influenced by others. She writes both non-fiction and fiction exploring these themes. Her works of fiction are mainly about the adventures of contemporary outsiders. Her non-fiction writing is centred on the tensions between social change and 'human-ness'. Nyla's interest in technology spans legal, economic and technical issues but is most keenly devoted to the impact on individual and social relations. She is a life-long advocate of simplicity, walking and nature and writes about the necessity to revive these elements as part of a human-centred life. Nyla has a BSc in Management Science, a Master of Science degree in Urban Regeneration and a Master of Law degree. She is also a PGCE qualified trainer, a qualified personal fitness trainer and a certified NLP practitioner. Away from her writing she can frequently be seen pounding the paths as a long-distance hiker.
