Guilty But Insane is the second volume in Johannes autobiographical series. In Cheltenham Art College, we are plunged into 1974, the heady after-flush of the sixties, with its extraordinary mish-mash of spirituality, politics, mind expansion, music and love. His three years of sculpture degree course (1975 78) saw him at Winchester College of Art and Design, dabbling in metaphysical constructions and flirting with punk. Johannes unashamedly and candidly shares his psychotropic experiences, first love and first work. The book is well spattered with colourful incidents, character vignettes, friendships and strange happenings. We are given a vision of a freer world, less constrained by fear and legislation. Various hitch-hiking trips with his stalwart companion, Aonghus Gordon, are undertaken to Greece, Turkey, Southern Europe, Israel and Egypt. Ancient cultures and the continuity of civilisation are explored. The summer of 1979, sees them in America, travelling as the early settlers did, from east to west, revelling in the boundless diversity and splendour of the natural world and working in a Camphill Community for adults with special needs, in New York state. In the early eighties, Johannes first serious commissions kick in: the pen drawings for Peter Patterson s book, Fal, and the Rowan Tree Grail fountain.

Born in Stockholm in 1956, Johannes Steuck spent his first few years in Germany. He grew up in the Camphill Community in Thornbury near Bristol and was educated at Wynstones Rudolf Steiner School. He completed a degree in sculpture at Winchester College of Art and Design in 1978 and a MSC in special education in 2014. Johannes has worked as a gardener, artist, educator and teacher for many years. As an artist he is best known for his stained glass, notably the Mourne Grange Chapel windows (1996/97) and the Freeman College windows in Sheffield (2008). He taught humanities at the Acorn school for many years, and art to special needs adults in the Hatch Community. Johannes first autobiographical volume came out in 2015, White Sand and Grey Sand, Anastasi Ltd. He has written the text for three art books by the artist Greg Tricker: The Catacombs, Vox Humana press 2002, Francis of Assisi, Paintings for our Time, Green Books 2005, and Kaspar Hauser, The Holy Fool a Path of Sacrifice, Millwheel Art press 2006. His short story, The Fire in the Snow, Anastasi Ltd, appeared in 2008. He co-authored a book on crafts: Crafting Transforming Materials and the Maker, Hands on Press 2019. Johannes is married, has three sons and lives in Stroud, Gloucestershire and in Northern Ireland.
