Presenting the theory of fixed and adaptive urban signal setting design at both the single junction and network levels, this book explores advances in intelligent transportation systems, the impact of connected and cooperative vehicles on traffic analysis and control, and strategies for optimising safety, fuel consumption and emissions. Urban traffic control systems manage traffic in towns and cities by integrating and co-ordinating traffic signal control over a wide area, in order to control traffic flow on the roads. By linking signals electronically, it is possible to co-ordinate traffic signals and the time offsets between them, either identifying and fixing optimal timings or varying signal timings in response to emerging traffic situations, helping to improve safety and minimise travel time or the number of stop-starts made by cars. Achieving this optimisation requires an understanding of traffic analysis and flow theory, and their applications to traffic control - the key topics covered in this book.
