In this study of political socialization of secondary school students in transitional Hong Kong, the author argues that there was a making of an alienated generation. On the basis of four data sets created in 1988, students were found to share a benevolent image of the Hong Kong government, but a malevolent image of the Chinese government. Empirically, the study helps to unfold the dynamics of a socialization of alienation in social, family and school life. The author concludes that the legitimacy of the Special Administrative Region government and the national identity of the younger generation of Hong Kong will all be in doubt.
