Exploring public policy making for peripheral concerns, the author presents a critical examination of the processes of making policy for the arts in Great Britain and Ireland. She assesses the sustainability of existing models for the study of policy making for areas which are on the edge of mainstream society. Throughout, this text deals with a number of political aspects and shows how government has become more proximate to the Arts Council and the consequences of this growing intimacy. It documents the government's changing role in, and attitudes towards the arts. It challenges the language used in this area and considers its implications regarding the production of a realistic policy for the arts sector. And finally, it provides a critical overview of recent developments which have occured in the arts.
