Présentation de l'éditeur

The broad aim of the book is to try to illuminate the contribution of philosophy of sport to our understanding of contemporary sport. The chapters address some of the different fields of philosophy and their application in philosophy of sport including aesthetics, ethics, philosophy of education, philosophy of rules, and social and political philosophy. Drawing on these and other disciplines, the authors in this volume write from within a range of theoretical positions, styles and philosophical traditions, revisiting and shedding light on some of the more intractable issues in contemporary sport as well as raising new ones. The collection is directed to a broad public. The applied nature of the collection will also appeal to university students studying sport from within and across different disciplines as well as sports fans who want to develop a deeper understanding of contemporary sports than they are currently offered by the media. As a whole, the collection offers the discerning reader deep insights into contemporary issues in sport including such diverse themes as institutional corruption, the commodification of the body, ideals of health and corporeal aesthetics, and the social and political uses and value of sport. These papers present the work of both established and new scholars from Asia, Europe and North America, and demonstrate just some of the increasing diversity of views and approaches in this expanding field of philosophical study.
