The remains of domestic dogs are found in archaeological sites around the world, providing an unexpected global link between archaeologists regardless of the cultures they study. Dogs were the first animal to establish a domestic relationship with humans and thus have the longest archaeological history of any domesticate. Due to this wide-spread distribution over time and space, the dog is literally the only animal that prehistorians have in common. Therefore the questions which still need answering regarding the history of the dog are relevant to virtually all archaeologists no matter where they work.
