Michael Chinery grew up in the Chilterns where he rapidly acquired an interest in the countryside and its wildlife. After studying botany, zoology, geology and anthropology at Cambridge, Michael Chinery entered publishing as assistant editor of Understanding Science, a science magazine for young people. He then became assistant editor of Animals, which is now BBC Wildlife. In 1965 he became a freelance writer specializing in insects and in garden natural history. In addition to writing many books, he has contributed numerous articles to natural history magazines and to children s encyclopedias and he was a regular member of BBC Radio 4 s Wildlife panel for several years. Michael Chinery lives in a small Suffolk village where his not-too-neat garden provides a never-ending stream of birds, insects and other wildlife for study.
