Synopsis

For hundreds of years, artists have studied the underlying structure of the human body in order to draw or paint figures accurately. The book gives a grounding in anatomy, covering the key areas from the artist's viewpoint. Starting with an introduction to the history of the study of anatomy for art, the book then provides a list of materials and equipment that are used in anatomical drawing and painting. The next chapter explains the basic structures of the human body and how the underlying parts go together to create the superficial human appearance. There are then eight projects through which to practise anatomical knowledge. skills and teaches how to produce an anatomically accurate finished piece.

James Horton is an experienced artist with a particular knowledge of the field of anatomy. He has written numerous practical art books, including 'Learn to Draw the Figure', 'Pastel Techniques' and 'Skin Tones'. He teaches art in colleges around the UK, and has exhibited his work widely, including mixed exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Academy and Royal Portrait Society. He lives in Cambridge.
