Royal Irish Rifles, died at Burghersdorp Feb 13th, 1900, from wounds received in action at Stormberg Dec. 10th 1899. born in April, 1853, he joined the 83rd Foot from the Royal South Down Light Infantry Militia Dec. 1874, being promoted Capt. Jan., 1882, major Dec. 1889, and lieut.-col. Nov. 1896. Lieut.-Col. Eagar fell while leading a small party of men up a precipitous slope, where the attack had come to a stand-still.The author of “The Times History of the War” states that had Col. Eagar succeeded in his noble efforts and reached the crest, he “would have commanded the Boer Laager, and perhaps won the day.”
