A British civil servant and judge serving as a magistrate at Agra, Raikes records the crisis from an administrative and first-hand perspective.The narrative traces events from the outbreak at Meerut and Delhi through the growing alarm at Agra, the fall of Allygurh (Aligarh) and Muttra (Mathura), and the subsequent confinement within Agra Fort during the siege. Raikes also examines conditions in the province before the revolt, local resistance and the conduct of prominent figures, together with the response of the native army and police.Written from the standpoint of a senior colonial official, the work reflects contemporary British attitudes towards the rebellion, while also recording the differing loyalties of Indian princes and landowners and the measures employed to restore British authority.
