Synopsis

Born Mary Ann Evans, Victorian novelist George Eliot (1819-1880) is the author of a number of remarkable works, including the masterpiece 'Middlemarch'. Kathryn Hughes is a contributing editor to Prospect magazine and also writes for the Times Literary Supplement and The Economist. Her book 'George Eliot: The Last Victorian' (1999) won the James Tait Black prize and her most recent publication is 'The Short Life and Long Times of Mrs Beeton' (2005).
