"As the boy passed, I instinctively handed him one of my blocks of chocolate... The boy had probably never seen chocolate before, and he made no attempt to accept it. His elderly companion took the chocolate instead and asked in broken German, 'Why are you doing this?' I couldn't think of a good answer... so I gave him a smile and a nod instead." Born at the brink of World War II in Germany, Heinz Leisner is growing up curious and with a burning desire for adventure. In this astonishing life story, we follow Heinz as he grabs life by the horns bravely, sometimes recklessly, searching for his place on earth in his quest for a better future. It's a beautiful story of love so strong that it forgives abandonment. It's a story of bonds so powerful that neither war, nor distance, nor death tear people apart.
In 1934, I was born into a working class family. There were never aspirations on my part to advance to a higher position in life either social or financial, I was happy to be as I was. However, inquisitive was my mind, and so in some ways the disruption in my life came with opportunities. The saddest point in my life came when my brother died at the age of ten, and I felt very strongly that I was partly to blame for his demise. I could not forget the way he died and I always felt I owed him, but what could I do for a dead person? Many years later it hit me, I would write about him and tell the life he once lived.
