Synopsis

The author, Dick Webb, was born within the sound of Bow Bells and was properly brought up, with his three sisters, by his parents. To use modern parlance Mum could be described as a single parent most of the time with Dad dodging German gunfire at Normandy. Despite spending most of the war caring for us kids in the Anderson shelter or in more primitive conditions in caves at Chislehurst, Kent, Mum's love of the English language and good books rubbed off on the four children. As did her cockney sense of humour. Dick served an apprenticeship as an ornamental plasterer in Hammersmith. Coincidental to drawing his first week's pay as a journeyman came an invitation from the War Office to join the RAF where Dick was engaged as a weapon and boxing instructor. Whilst serving in the North of England Dick met his wife, Iris, born and bred in Bolton. She was unable to settle in London hence most of Dick's stories being set far from the M25. The marriage now includes three children and six grandchildren. His police service saw him in uniform for seven years, 20 years in the CID and the Regional Crime Squad and for the last four years of his service he commanded Great Manchester Police Crime Prevention Department. This task entailed making regular T.V. and radio appearances, lectures and after dinner speeches. Retirement has given him the opportunity to pursue his favourite hobby of short story writing.
