Kath Sharples is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at Thames Valley University, working within the Practice Education Support Unit. As an experienced Registered Nurse and Registered Nurse Teacher, Kath has a comprehensive and realistic understanding of the current challenges within nurse education. Her main role is to ensure quality learning experiences are available to pre-registration nursing students undertaking practice placements at the North West London Hospitals NHS Trust. In 2008 Kath received a teaching award from Thames Valley University in the category of Rising Star . Supporting both mentors and students in practice, Kath s main focus is to promote practice learning for students whilst supporting mentors in their responsibility as gatekeepers to the profession.

Pre-registration student nurses spend 50% of their training on practice placements which provide a wealth of opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and skills. However many students find themselves in a clinical environment which is foreign and confusing. This book will help the student to seek out and construct learning opportunities from within the clinical environment and to develop skills for practice learning which will help them to achieve a competent standard. This book will be, first and foremost, a practical and relevant guide for students on developing skills for learning from, in, and during their practice placements.
