Counsellors and Psychotherapists find themselves working in a variety of institutional settings where counselling practice is shaped not only by the counsellor's theoretical approach, but by the philosophy, culture and economic boundaries of the institution. This book is written with both students and practitioners in mind: for students on placements, or for those trainees who may be looking towards their first steps on a career pathway, as well as more experienced counsellors who may be looking to practice within a different setting. It draws upon the experience of counsellors active in their field and uses relevant examples of the potential pitfalls and rewards of counselling in diverse institutional settings. There are sections on working within a drug and alcohol treatment centre, working within the NHS and with the IAPT programme, working in schools, in Occupational Health settings, the Voluntary Sector and also practising in Further and Higher Education settings. This book will also introduce readers to the regulatory, legislative, economic, social and cultural considerations relevant to the confidential work between counsellor and client, where such work is part of a wider institutional and national context.
