Synopsis
In the grisly aftremath of the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1138, Brother Cadfael leaves his peaceful monastery to undertake the harrowing work of burying the dead. The official tally of the slain is 94 - but Brother Cadfael finds he has 95 to bury...in this matter of the 'corpse too many', Brother Cadfael's extraordinary abilities are taxed to the limit. He has to track down a murderer and avenge a brutal death.

Ellis Peters was the pseudonym of Edith Pargeter. She wrote twenty chronicles in the Cadfael series, which she produced annually until her death in 1995.
