Thirty-four-year-old writer, Oliver, becomes the guardian of his best friend's 15-year-old daughter, Jude, after the friend's sudden death. In the seven years that follow, Jude struggles with being alone in the world, albeit with a wonderful guardian whom she's always adored, and Oliver struggles with caring for a beloved child who is slowly becoming a woman - who is like a daughter and yet isn't. They each work through searing personal crises and ill-advised romances to find love with each other. But can it last?
A riveting, deeply moving and wonderfully written exploration of modern male and female attitudes to love - parental, erotic and everything in between - and the contradiction between the craving for love and the need for freedom.
