Hardcover. Etat : As New. Francesca Crespi (illustrateur). The Nativity: Six Glorious 3-D Tableaux Francesca Crespi (illustrator) Text by Veronica Heley Frances Lincoln Children's Books, London, 2005 Revised edition (first published 1994) ISBN 1-84507-343-6 / 9781845073435 Hardcover pop-up / landscape format with gold ribbon tie Printed in China Ages 3+ Original printed price £12.99 Condition: As New. A superb, unused-looking copy. All six three-dimensional tableaux are complete and fully functional. Every pull-tab, moving part, unfolding screen and double-door finale works smoothly with no tears, creases, detached pieces or paper fatigue. Ribbon tie present and intact. Boards bright, corners sharp, no bumps. Interior pages clean, unmarked and unfoxed. No previous owner names, inscriptions or library marks. A collector-grade example of this delicate paper-engineered Christmas book. Six glowing 3-D tableaux portray the marvellous story of the birth of Jesus in this simple and elegant retelling. Each scene has tabs to pull, moving parts and screens that unfold. In a splendid finale, double doors open wide to reveal the full glory of the Nativity. Scenes included (in order): The Angel - the Annunciation to Mary in Nazareth, with unfolding architectural arches, cypress trees and a revealing angel. No Room at the Inn - Joseph and Mary (on donkey) arriving in Bethlehem; innkeeper at the window; pull-tab and layered townscape. The Stable - ox and ass, Holy Family and infant in the manger beneath a star; opening stable doors. The Shepherds - shepherds and flock in the fields, multilayered landscape, spinning/angel choir disc in the heavens. The Wise Men - three Magi on camels following the star through an arched gateway; moving star element. The Gifts - the Adoration; Magi presenting gold, frankincense and myrrh; opening doors to the Holy Family surrounded by angels. Francesca Crespi's illustrations are richly detailed in a medieval-inspired, gilded style: gold halos, patterned robes, decorative tile borders, cypress trees and jewel-like colour. The paper engineering is unusually sophisticated for a children's pop-up: layered planes, die-cut windows, pull-tabs that animate figures, and theatrical "stage" openings that transform each spread. Text by Veronica Heley is a clear, gentle retelling suitable for young children while remaining faithful to the Gospel narrative. Back-cover dedication reads "Happy Christmas to my son Marcello." Copyrights: The Nativity © Frances Lincoln Limited 1994, 2005; illustrations © Francesca Crespi 1994; text © Veronica Heley 1994; back-cover photography © Rod Shone 2004. About the artist Francesca Crespi is an Italian-born illustrator and paper engineer known for finely crafted Christmas and fairy-tale pop-ups (also Ding Dong! Merrily on High, A Christmas Carousel, A Walk in Monet's Garden). Her work combines theatrical design training with intricate cut-paper construction. Bibliographic notes This is the 2005 UK Frances Lincoln revised edition matching the copy in hand (turquoise boards, star-bordered cover illustration of the stable with angels, ox and ass, Mary and Joseph at the manger). Not the 1994 first edition or the 2005 US Sterling issue (different ISBN and cover treatment). Scarce in this condition because the moving parts are fragile and frequently damaged in used copies. A beautiful object as well as a book: intended both to be read and to stand open as a seasonal display. Complete, working and exceptionally well preserved. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1789500952739
