'Mr China' was a story of China in the 90's when, against the odds, peasant entrepreneurs outwitted millionaire investment bankers and taught them the hard way that China doesn't play by anyone else's rules. Two decades later, China's role as struggling underdog is firmly a thing of the past. The world has tilted eastwards in its orbit; China grows confident as the West is mired in debt. Part memoir, part history, this story of building a climate-change business in China shows how knowledge of traditional Chinese thought can provide a framework for Westerners to understand modern day China. Drawing on key episodes in China's recent history, it explores the Five Chinese Rules that can enable foreigners not only to cooperate with China but also to compete with it on its own terms. China now has a key role in addressing most of the world's economic and environmental problems; only by understanding China better can we hope to live in harmony with each other and with nature.

After graduating from Cambridge, Tim Clissold set up Arthur Andersen's China Investment Services, learnt Mandarin then co-founded a private equity group investing in China. He has lived and worked there for two decades; since his early misadventures he has negotiated deals worth over $1 billion. He lives in Beijing.
