Synopsis

The global textile industry, like many others is inherently unsustainable, and has a high impact upon the environment. The cotton industry alone is a major user of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. The industry also consumes large amounts of water, putting pressure on scarce water resources and the environment. This book investigates the entire life cycle of textiles and their impact on the environment. Chapters analyse all stages of the textile industry beginning with the production and manufacture of fibres, through to fabric manufacture and the final recycling of textiles. A concluding set of chapters examines sustainable environmental applications and case studies within the textile industry.

Key Features: reviews government regulations and consumer expectations about environmental impact on the textiles industry; discusses ways of achieving more sustainable materials and technologies as well as textiles recycling; examines how sustainability can be integrated into textile design, production and processes; includes applications and case studies of eco-labelling, organic cotton and nanotechnology in sustainable textiles.

Contents: Part 1 Sustainability through the supply chain: Achieving sustainable textiles: a designer s perspective; Sustainable cotton production and processing; Sustainable wool production and processing; Sustainable synthetic fibres: the case of poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHA) and other fibres; Enzyme biotechnology for sustainable textiles; Key sustainability issues in textile dyeing; Environmentally-friendly plasma technologies for textiles; Understanding and improving textile recycling: a systems perspective.
