Synopsis

Chinese in Steps is a series of textbooks designed for English speakers studying Chinese as part of a university degree programme or on non-credit bearing part-time courses. The textbooks are developed with reference to Asset Language, Common European Framework and HSK specifications. The series has been piloted in a number of British higher education institutions such as the SOAS Language Centre and the European Business School in London. Volume II of 'Chinese in Steps' is for beginners who have completed the first volume. This volume also has 10 lessons. Each lesson starts with a clear objective, and focuses on four key speech patterns or constructions, which are the core components in developing learners' communicative competence. Grammatical knowledge is spread over the lessons and explained in simple English, often with examples. Each lesson introduces 22 characters, and like Volume I, the layout of each lesson consists of new vocabulary, speech patterns, dialogues, notes on grammar, a cultural note, exercises, character stroke order, and finally information on Chinese characters.
