Etat : New. 2006 N&M Press reprint (of original pub ). SB. xv + 185pp.Published Price £11.50 Originally published by Longmans, Green, & Co. in 1906, Recollections of a Lucknow Veteran, 1845-1876 is the military memoir of Major-General John Ruggles (1827-1906), Colonel of the 19th Punjabis. Drawing upon his own notes and Mr Gibbin's account, Ruggles recounts his service in British India, with the greater part devoted to the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and, in particular, the defence and relief of the Lucknow Residency from June to November. The narrative begins with the outbreak of the Mutiny, tracing events through the arduous defence of the Residency and its eventual relief. Ruggles subsequently records his participation in the expedition to China in 1860-61 and the Bhootan campaign of 1865, before concluding with his retirement from military service in 1876.Combining personal recollection with contemporary sources, the memoir offers a valuable firsthand perspective on a defining episode of British military history in India.
