Reginald Jacobs charts the history of the area, world-famous as the location of the Royal Opera House and Covent Garden Market, from its unassuming beginnings as the "convent garden," a burial-ground belonging to Westminster Abbey prior to Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, to the early 20th century. Along the way he records all manner of interesting facts about Covent Garden, covering such well-known places as St. Paul's Church, Bow Street, Covent Garden Theatre--now the Opera House--Drury Lane, the Garrick Club, and the Market.

In presenting a hiatory of Co Tent Garden and its Immediate Neighbourhood, I am consdous of dealing with some subjects which hare already engaged the attention of various writers; but the absorbing interest of these subjects and their intimate connection with Goreut Churden must be my excuse for baring sketched them in brief outline.
