The personal stories of the changing face of Irish fishing since 1950, including interviews with figureheads of fishing communities all over Ireland In the last 60 years, inshore fishing and single-day fishing have but disappeared, replaced with offshore fishing, requiring men to spend several days at sea at any one time. This is a compilation of the memories and experiences of individual boat owners and skippers who put to sea during the ups and downs of a period of great change that ensured a fisherman's lot would never be the same again. During his many visits to fishermen of yesteryear on coastal Ireland, Pat Nolan has noted the memories of men who contributed to the new order--men of courage, ambition, determination, and astuteness who have exhibited great talent in perfecting fishing techniques, pitting their wits against the elements, and adhering to various bureaucratic demands. The book deals with the experiences, opinions, grievances, disappointments, humor, and occasional sadness encountered by those men. Also included are the recollections of esteemed boatyard men.
