Frank Wright is the archetypal family man. He and his wife Ann are devoted to each other and to their only daughter Sue, who is a brave and happy child, eager to learn from her father's love of the outdoors. They roam the fells, sail and fish in the lakes, while Ann provides safe haven at home. Frank is a pretty demanding parent, being a successful teacher, but Sue surpasses every new target her father can set her. The stage seems set for a happy family saga.
But troubles are on the horizon for the Wright family when Frank decides to try his hand in the cut-throat world of business, and Sue goes abroad for the first time and falls in love with a singer in a Spanish nightclub. Before long all their lives are turned upside down, as granddaughter Pippa arrives to take over Frank and Ann s house, and their hearts. As Pippa grows up she shares her grandfather s deep love of sailing. Court action looms for Sue and her new husband, as they are betrayed on all sides. Sometimes it seems that the only way out of the troubles of everyday life is to sail away on Sea Pearl, but even the weather turns against them. Can the building blocks of this extraordinary family withstand the storm?
