What do you do when you suddenly and unexpectedly find yourself with all the time in the world to do whatever you like - and no one now to do it with?
Recently retired and even more recently, and traumatically, bereaved, Mary Edmonds found herself in this position. So what did she do? She took herself off to parts of the world many of us haven't even heard of, let alone know where they are!
This delightful book is a poignant yet humorous account of Mary's first forays out on her own - to Moldova, Thailand, Vietnam, India and Nepal. Along the way, we get to know the people she becomes acquainted with as she carves out a new and adventurous life alone.
Full of sharply perceived characters, local history and charming anecdotes, this is a book for all ages, and for those who love travelling, whether in reality or from the comfort of their armchair!
Born in London in 1930, Mary Edmonds spent the war as an evacuee. After finishing her education in Rickmansworth and Chiswick, she was desperate to be a journalist, but, thwarted by a mother with other ideas, she eventually became a secondary schoolteacher instead, retiring from Waldegrave School for Girls in 1991. She also completed a degree in Business Studies in 1984.
Married for forty years, she has four children. Her husband died in 1993, and his traumatic death is where The Roving Wrinkly begins. Since 1997, where the story ends, she has travelled to many other far-flung parts of the globe, including Africa, South America, the Galapagos Islands, Cuba and Borneo. She has particularly fallen in love with Mojacar in south-east Spain and now spends much of her time there, although she retains her home in Twickenham.

hardcover. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
