Synopsis

THE PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS OF A CAVALRYMAN DURING THE WARS OF AFRICA IN THE EARLY VICTORIAN PERIOD. This is an unusual and engaging account of a 'pint sized' British Army heavy dragoon who enlists and is straightaway dispatched to Southern Africa. After a brief military encounter with the Boers beyond the Orange River the focus of this book turns to the Kaffir 'War of the Axe'. Little has been written about this war, but Adams reveals it as a "Sword point to Assegai" affair against a numerically vastly superior foe as poignant and interesting as later Victorian campaigns in Africa against other tribes proved to be. An essential memoir.
