A tale of love and lust, desire, duty and death, beginning in 1468 at Middleham Castle in Wensleydale, where a young maiden in service with the Earl and Countess of Warwick meets the teenage Richard Duke of Gloucester and falls in love. The story follows Eleanor's life as she bears him an illegitimate child, weds a soldier, is widowed, weds again to a huntsman but is widowed again. The narrative also follows the factual events of Richard's life in parallel, as he fights his first battles, marries Anne Neville, becomes Lord of the North, is crowned King, faces rebellion and treachery, suffers the loss of his wife and son and finally falls so courageously at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. The author portrays life at Middleham Castle in the late 15th century, the rich countryside of rural Yorkshire and the turbulent life of Richard III, in an attempt to portray a more realistic and sympathetic picture of this much maligned young statesman, distancing him from the well known Tudor propaganda which has no basis in fact. In her conclusion, the author takes the opportunity to express her views about Richard III which she hopes will resonate with Ricardians and non-Ricardians alike. Comments on social media include: Good read, lots of historical fact - well researched - so much more than light fiction - great authenticity - luxuriant descriptions - imaginative and romantic - beautiful and sad.
