Scepticism as a philosophical term is as old as the Greeks but has more recently been advanced by Montaigne, Descartes and Hume. To these, what little we know that seems certain is based on observation and habit as opposed to any logical or scientific necessity. Thus, sceptical views relate directly to epistemology-the theory of knowledge and what we can know-and, in the modern turbulent world, it is grayling's contention that these are issues that all contemporary people need to focus on. In seeking understanding of the human condition we need more than just a set of beliefs about it: all belief is irrational. We want to know or garner some kind of proof about the fundamental truths of human existence. This is the crux of the dilemma facing intelligent people today and is illuminated by this book.

About the book >.>.> Scepticism and the Possibility of Knowledge, authored by A.C. Grayling, is a philosophical exploration that delves into the fundamental question of whether knowledge is attainable. This comprehensive study highlights the centrality of scepticism in philosophical discourse, a topic that has engaged thinkers since antiquity. From the time of Descartes to the present, numerous philosophers have attempted to address and resolve sceptical challenges, and Grayling offers a fresh perspective by examining various significant alternative approaches. In this series of studies, Grayling articulates his answer to the sceptical problem, drawing upon insights from a range of philosophical traditions alongside his own extensive investigations, which span over thirty years. His examination incorporates a wealth of work, including a previous book, papers, articles, and lectures, illustrating his deep engagement with the subject matter. Grayling posits that a precise dissection of scepticism concerning the possibility of knowledge can lead to appropriate responses to the challenges it presents. He likens this discourse to the allegory of blind men attempting to describe an elephant?each contributor perceives only a part of the whole, thus capturing a fraction of the truth without comprehending the complete picture. This critical work invites readers to reflect on the intricacies of knowledge and the various dimensions of scepticism. Grayling?s thorough approach not only enriches the understanding of these philosophical debates but also encourages further inquiry into the nature and limits of human understanding. As such, this book serves as a valuable resource for anyone engaged in the field of philosophy, whether they are seasoned scholars or newcomers eager to explore the complexities of knowledge and belief.
