Synopsis

Presents a new way of working with families and groups, creating a helping context to reduce stress and facilitate communication. Drawing on their experience of providing family therapy, the authors have written this book to help families solve or resolve problems that have the potential to escalate into conflict. They explain how this can be achieved in a single three-hour meeting by exploring the difficulties that are creating dissension, encouraging the family members to listen to each other and empowering them to reach new decisions. Issues such as placing a relative in long-term care, selling the family home, challenging family legacies and confronting secret histories are explored through case histories, thereby demonstrating just how effective this once-off meeting can be.

Biographie de l'auteur

Sarah was joint-coordinator with her husband of the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation in the 1980s. It was there that she began to realise the value of resolving conflict, arising from prejudice and misunderstanding, through listening, sharing and seeking common beliefs. She trained as a family therapist and worked for many years at the Clanwilliam Institute, Dublin. Although now in excellent health, she has survived many encounters with cancer. Today Sarah enjoys living in the countryside and is involved with four generations of family. Ursula holds a primary degree in Economic Science and a Diploma in Psychology from University College, Dublin. She is an honorary member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and former Secretary and Cathaoirleach of that organisation. Currently a Counselling Tutor at the Liberies College in Dublin, she has worked with family and voluntary groups seeking resolution of their difficulties. Ursula is the author of First Steps in Counselling, Courage to Change and Considering Counselling (Veritas, 1988/2006, 1999 and 2004 respectively). She lives in Dublin, loves to ravel and is much involved with her extensive family.
