Synopsis

Anyone who has enjoyed Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals and Marijcke Jongbloed's own Wild About Cats will love these hugely entertaining and finely illustrated stories of encounters with both domestic and wild animals. Dr Jongbloed's decision in 1983 to leave her GP practice in Amsterdam and move to the UAE was not sudden. For years she had dreamed of going to Arabia and, when a job in the desert town of Al Ain presented itself, she jumped at it. Her life there and later in Dubai and Sharjah brought her into close contact with all manner of beasts and birds. She soon became involved in animal rescues and the breeding of endangered local wildlife - sand foxes, leopards, gazelles, agamas, a beautiful caracal and a faithful 'wolf-saluki' called Sandy, to name but a few. Alongside dedicated friends and in spite of a few equally dedicated foes, she spent twenty years working for wildlife, until she retired to France, accompanied by two pets and armed with two knighthoods from the Netherlands. There she wrote these delightful memoirs of hot days and nights in the desert.
