William Shakespeare, poet, playwright and actor, was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, the son of a glover, merchant and justice of the peace. He attended grammar school and later went to London, where he worked hard on his career, becoming established as a dramatist by 1592. He he is generally regarded as the world's greatest English writer.

Dr Warren Boutcher is Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London and is an expert in the Late Renaissance, the period during which Shakespeare wrote his famous plays. His current projects include "The School of Montaigne" (Oxford University Press, forthcoming). He is head of the first year undergraduate Shakespeare course at Queen Mary, which includes collaborations with Shakespeare’s Globe. He has made extensive contributions to books and journals.
