Using the objective eye of a professional historian, he has visited the institutions of Littlejohn's life and career, in Northern Ireland, Chicago, Illinois and Kirksville, Missouri, and the National Osteopathic Archive in London, as well as holding interviews with Littlejohn's family in the UK. John O'Brien practiced as an osteopath for 40 years. In that time he also taught osteopathic history and clinical studies, including spending 21 years as a final clinical examiner. He gained his MA in the History of Medicine and, recently, has been co-founder and archivist at the National Osteopathic Archive in London.
