Severely 'edited' by the cultural powers that formed and built the new Irish state, "Peig" was a compulsory text on the Irish Leaving Certificate exams for generations of schoolgoers. But there was a lot more to "Peig" than tales of poverty and hardship - in this selection of previously unpublished stories, a new, earthier, funnier and more dramatic storyteller emerges. Based on RTAe, UCD and BBC archives, and translated by UCD's Bo Almqvist and Padraig O' Healai, Ireland's leading experts on "Peig", the book includes CDs with archived recordings of Peig telling these stories, and is published in a dual-language edition.

Biographie de l'auteur

Bo Almqvist, Emeritus Professor of UCD, has dedicated his career to the study of Peig and Irish folklore. Together with Padraig A"'Healai of NUI Galway, he has edited the Bealoideas: The Journal of the Folklore Society of Ireland. Padraig A"'Healai has also edited Teada Duchais (2002).
