Synopsis

Published here for the first time, First Episode is Terence Rattigan's first play. Written with his fellow student, Philip Heimann, while they were both at Oxford, it shows an infatuated undergraduate, Tony, falling for Margot, an actress ten years his senior. And vice versa. Completing a triangle of rival affections is Tony's best friend, David. First staged at a small experimental theatre in Kew in 1933, First Episode transferred to the West End and then New York. Though not revived since then, it is a candidate - with it's cast of eight - for rediscovery, much as was the now-feted After the Dance. It is published to mark the centenary of Rattigan's birth.

TERENCE RATTIGAN (1911-1977) hit the jackpot at the age of 25 with French Without Tears and followed this success with, among others, After the Dance, The Browning Version, The Deep Blue Sea, Separate Tables and The Winslow Boy. Most of Rattigan's plays are currently published in handsome uniform editions by Nick Hern Books, with life sales of several thousand to date.
