Drawing inspiration from the everyday creativity of ordinary people, the late Colin Ward long championed a unique social and environmental politics that is premised on the possibilities of democratic self-organisation and self-management from below. This collection gives a wide-ranging overview of Ward's earliest journalism, with seminal essays, extracts from his most important books and examples of his most recent work. Much of his work considered the problems of housing and education, specifically how they might be better organised.

Colin Ward was the author of more than 30 books on subjects including anarchism, childhood, allotments, town planning, architecture, housing and children's play. A highly respected (and much missed) social theorist, he has been as influential on environmentalists, town planners and architects as he has been on anarchists, squatters and travellers.
