Synopsis
This illustrated book, in a series which is designed to be a first information series and which aims to encourage children to learn about the world around them, looks at castles of all ages from all over the world. The author describes how castles developed from earlier forms such as hill forts, and how medieval castles were built. He looks at the lives of lords and knights and the many ordinary people carrying out different activities in various parts of the castle, as well as the general lifestyle, the types of entertainment enjoyed and the working of justice and use of dungeons for prisoners. He also examines the decline of castles and looks at castles still standing today.
