Synopsis

The role of the castle in England, Scotland and Wales is examined and its emergence and dominance as a symbol of power during the period succeeding the Norman Conquest. It includes a detailed look at motte-and-bailey castles, the development of the keep and the ambitious constructions of Edward I in Wales. Castle design and its effect on everyday living is considered and its final decline following growing internal peace and the development of powerful artillery. Later, less important fortifications such as Martello Towers and the Second World War pillboxes played their part.
