Synopsis
This is one of a series which aims to inform teenagers about some of the most controversial issues of today. This book aims to illustrate the arguments surrounding nuclear weapons by looking at the first nuclear weapons, examining the "nuclear winter" theory and the use of civil defence. The following chapters consider the issue of deterrence and ask whether nuclear weapons are, in fact, keeping the peace; the proliferation of nuclear weapons and how it can be stopped; the question of whether nuclear weapons are morally right or wrong; the effectiveness of arms control talks, and the problems raised or solved by "star wars" defence systems.
