This series introduces the reader to people who help the community through the jobs that they perform. Each book focuses on an individual member of the featured public or emergency services; the experiences of their working day are used to illustrate the importance of their role in the community. Wherever possible, care has been taken to make these experiences relevant to those of the reader. About Rob, who drives the InterCity passenger trains between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and London. The reader finds out what a big railway station is like and is introduced to some children who are travelling on Rob's train. The author explains what Rob has to do when he is driving the train; what happens when he comes to a red signal, and how the train arrives at the correct platform in the station. They also show how Rob is helped in his job by other railway staff such as the signal man, the senior conductor and his co-driver. There is a dual-level text, to help younger or less able readers.
