Synopsis

Starting maths is a series which provides an introduction to infant maths in an approachable way. The concepts dealt with in each book follow the guidelines of the British National Curriculum. "Adding Up" introduces one of the fundamental number operations in mathematics - addition. It begins by explaining the idea of adding up numbers to obtain a total, and goes on to give examples to show the importance and use of addition in our everyday lives. The book encourages children to take part in a variety of activities that help to give a greater understanding of the topic. When you are out shopping, how do you know if you have enough money to pay for the things you want to buy? The book begins by explaining what adding up is and asking the reader to carry out some simple additions where the numbers involved are 10 or less. It shows why objects, including money, are added up and how basic sums are written out. Slightly more difficult addition problems are then introduced, with numbers up to 20. Activities such as adding up some of the hours in a child's day, a dice game, and pretending to be a shopkeeper make the subject fun to study.
