Millet was already well known in France as an art critic, curator and co-founder of the influential magazine Art Press . She belonged to the serious Parisian cultural world of galleries, theory, aesthetics and people standing thoughtfully before large white canvases. Then she published this account of her numerous sexual encounters and became internationally famous for an entirely different body of work. Beginning with her sexual awakening, Millet describes a life involving many partners, anonymous encounters, group sex, clubs, parties and carefully arranged meetings in apartments, offices and outdoor spaces. Fidelity, romantic exclusivity and the conventional relationship timetable make only occasional guest appearances. Where most memoirists discreetly draw a curtain, Millet pauses to assess the dimensions of the room. What made the book notorious was not simply the quantity or variety of sex, but the author?s peculiar composure in describing it. Her tone is analytical, detached and exact, closer at times to an architectural survey than a confession. Bodies occupy space, groups form and disperse, desire is observed from inside and outside, and practical arrangements receive the attention lesser writers reserve for emotional revelation. There is remarkably little shame, boasting or theatrical rebellion. Millet is not asking forgiveness, permission or applause, which leaves the reader in the unusual position of having to decide what to do with all three. The book also examines the separation between sex, love, jealousy and identity. Millet writes about her body almost as though it were both herself and an independent participant whose behaviour she has been commissioned to document. Her experiences do not form the familiar journey from innocence through excess to respectable repentance. There is no final chapter in which she buys a cottage, discovers monogamy and apologises to civilisation. Instead, she considers the patterns of her desire and what they reveal about memory, fantasy, freedom and the curious distance between physical intimacy and emotional possession. Despite its explicit subject, The Sexual Life of Catherine M is not written as conventional erotica. Its interest lies as much in consciousness as in copulation: how a person remembers sexual experience, how the self is altered or preserved within a crowd, and whether complete physical exposure necessarily tells us anything definite about the individual exposed. It is intimate in factual detail while remaining psychologically elusive?a considerable achievement when almost nothing has been left on. First published in France in 2001, the memoir became an international sensation, provoking admiration, discomfort and a great many newspaper discussions conducted by reviewers trying to sound academically unflustered. It remains a provocative mixture of autobiography, erotic testimony and intellectual self-examination, written with the cool assurance of a woman accustomed to analysing difficult modern art and apparently seeing no reason why her own sexual history should receive less rigorous treatment.
