Synopsis
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is designed to be the standard method of navigation for all means of transport throughout the world well into the 21st century. It is based on a constellation of satellites and offers positional accuracy to within 30 metres anywhere on the earth's surface. The cost of a receiver is now low enough to be within the range of the average yachtsman and other sportsmen. It is written with the aim of enabling those not entirely familiar with navigational procedure to understand the system's use.
