[ ABOUT THE BOOK ] The Tiger Rugs of Tibet Book by Mimi Lipton | The Tiger Rugs of Tibet is a study of Tibetan tiger carpets, their rarity, origins, use and symbolism. It describes how Tibet's geography and rulers long restricted access to the region, while trade and military ventures brought gradual changes to its faiths, technologies and traditions. Foreign travellers, diplomats, missionaries and merchants later returned with accounts of Tibetan life and with religious and secular objects, including carpets. Yet no tiger carpet was known to have left Tibet until 1979, when one was brought to the United States and purchased by the Newark Museum. | The book illustrates 108 rugs, a number of particular significance in Tibetan culture. The text notes that 108 appears in the volumes of the Lamaic scripture Bka-gyur, the beads of a Tibetan rosary and the plaits in a Tibetan woman's hair. It also records that fewer than 200 old, authentic Tibetan tiger rugs are thought to have survived, alongside contemporary tiger carpets produced by Tibetan refugees in Nepal. (MP).
