The aim of this book is to explore the implications of different ways of thinking about the professional competence of teachers. It does so through case studies of competence frameworks used in a number of teacher education contexts, and, for comparative insights, in social work, nursing and police training. The book arose out of the work of a research seminar group working under the auspices of the ESRC.
