Lawrence Stenhouse was one of the most influential figures in education in the 1970s and early 1980s. He was Director of the Humanities Curriculum Project; he founded the Centre for Applied Research in Education at the University of East Anglia; he was an early advocate of teacher research and a radical supporter of qualitative research, and in particular of case study methods. He wrote about curriculum development, the art of teaching and school-focused research in ways that were accessible, engaging and intellectually powerful. He died in 1982 but his ideas have a continuing relevance and his work is widely quoted in this country and abroad. After his death a Trust Fund was established to support an annual lecture in his memory. In 1988 the British Educational Research Association's Annual Conference became the regular setting for these lectures and the first five are collected here. They were given, in chronological order, by: John Elliot, Stephen Kemmis, Brian Simon, Tony Edwards and Donald McIntyre.

Jean Rudduck joined Lawrence Stenhouse's Humanities Curriculum Project team in 1968 and, with other members of the team, founded the Centre for Applied Research in Education at the University of East Anglia. In 1984, after Lawrence Stenhouse's death, she moved to Sheffield University as Professor of Education. In 1994 she was appointed Director of Research at Homerton College, Cambridge. One of her main research concerns has been the exploration of the pupil's perspective on curriculum change, on teaching and learning and on structures of schooling. Recent books include: Innovation and Change (Open University Press, 1991); Dimensions of Discipline (with D. Gillborn and J. Nixon; HMSO, 1993); Developing a Gender Policy in Secondary Schools (Open University Press, 1994). She is currently directing an ESRC study which tracks pupils' experiences during their last four years of secondary schooling.
